i hate vista

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Our PC vendor is rolling out vista in a few months.   At work.    I was asked to check whether some of our more commonly used applications would work on Vista. It was my job to take the testing vista lap top, install the packages and play around with them. Easy, it’ll take an hour. Or so you might think. The vista boot took at least ten minutes. I kid you not. The “building desktop” wheel kept going around and around and around. Trying to switch the Vista bubbly bubbles off in the start bar caused the whole start bar to display that display message beloved by all computer users in the title bar. “Not Responding”. Tweaking settings crashed the Vistaness. A reboot later, all was well in the world. Except for the toolbar gadget. I didn’t like that. I switched it off. Downloads took much much longer than the same download did on old machine running the old MS operating system. Installing them - message after message “unknown application, danger, danger red alert”. Fuck Off! I know what I am installing. Obviously MS have gone for the lowest common demoninator here. Only an imbicile uses MS operating systems is clearly is their mantra. People who want speed and to be treated like they have a brain choose Linux or have a Mac. Everytime I opened a new program, I felt like some artist was behind the screen colouring in the pixels, stuff took an age to install. Really simple tasks were definitely slower. I don’t know how much memory the test pc had, but the vistaness is NASTY. I do not like it. Two hours later I was finished my task. Vista? I am sorry it has come into view.

potato

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

SK and I kept potatoes in a drawer. It was a dark dawer. Akin to under the ground I suppose. All our potatoes started sprouting from their eyes. On a regular basis. We used to throw the potatoes with the sprouting eyes out. Our yucca needed a bigger pot. It got one. It seemed too big for just a yucca, so it got an ivy also. But it was still a large pot. I decided that maybe the pot could house a sprouting eye potato. I planted a potato. Now it is the mutant potato plant. It gets bigger every day.

Hugh F-W is trying to prove that you can grow seasonal vegetables anywhere. This potato proves that. I am looking forward to its crop sometime in august or september.

baking

there’s a cake sale in work.

it’s for the irish hospice foundation.

i baked 48 cupcakes. i’m bringing 40 of them to work. four flavours ten of each.
chocolate. coffee. grapefruit. vanilla.

there were stories about waiting lists for hospice places. in ireland you have to wait to die. that’s a pretty hard hitting headline.
