recycling

why do some bring centres for recycling operate at such unfriendly hours?

we have a bag full of clothes waiting to go for recycling ( i really don’t think they are good enough for charity shops, they are ancient) but the problem is finding a bring centre that is open in the evening.

the dublin waste website allows you to search for recycling centres that will take your specific stuff, in my case, reusable clothing. the nearest one happens to be in glasthule. great i thought, i’ll go there on the way to work. luckily for me, i can go there on the way to work, otherwise i’d have no chance of making their opening hours, which to my mind seem a little limited.

Mon-Thur 8.30am-4.00pm
Friday 8.30am-2.00pm
Saturday 8.30am-3.30pm
Sunday Closed

if i were running the bring centre, i’d try to ensure it was open on a sunday. nearby dun laoghaire is at its busiest on a sunday, the farmers market runs, etc. if you want to encourage people to recycle, then, having the recycling centre open on what is generally the busiest day in the area would be useful.

dissatisfied with the limited opening hours, i went further afield in search of recycling centres near to where i live that may be open for longer hours and that take clothing.

the dun laoghaire rathdown website provides such information under the heading “recycling” in its AtoZ index. ballyogan recycling centre is linked to from the main page, but you have to pay twenty euro per car to recycle in ballyogan! hardly encouraging, is it?

i found a list of twenty four hour bring centres. the list was only five clicks from the main page. i only had to scroll to the bottom of two windows. again, not exactly encouraging. you have to dig five links deep to find the information.

ikea

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Ikea are coming to Belfast in December. I am so exited about this. For many a year I have poured enviously through the pages of Ikea’s catalogues which they publish on their website. I have planned innumerable kitchens. I have looked at shelving, storage nirvana that it seems to be in Ikea. I look forward to my foray up to the new Ikea shop. I wonder will they deliver heavy furniture down south? If they are sensible, they will. Pity the poor Dublin Ikea, so so so delayed. By the time it opens, we’ll all have been up north and it will not be such a novelty. Ikea should do wonders for cross border trips up North, which can only have declined in numbers given Sterling’s strength against the Euro. There are many in Ireland (Republic) who also have never been up North. Will Ikea be the carrot.

Getting back to Ikea, I wonder will they display prices in pounds and euros? I hope not truthfully. Shops that display sterling and euro prices usually completely overcharge those paying in euro. When you convert, the rate is terrible.

Ikea. I’m dreaming of Ikea storage nirvana. It should help to clear this mess of a study. Which once was really really tidy, but not its out of control messy.

These shelves can be converted to to or three high up shelves allowing for a bigger desk underneath so that I have somewhere to work that isn’t the husbands computer desk territory. He has his computer. I want a surface for my sewing machine so I can finish my project that I started two years ago. A long, one hundred and eight centimeters work bench type surface. Where better than Ikea to buy the legs for such a desk.

update to three hour masking tape

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

the three hour masking tape stayed down for thirty six hours and it came up easily and without fuss.

lesson to be learned here: when using three hour masking tape on travertine or solid oak junckers flooring, it comes up without fuss.
