Mary Harney has announced that work permits will be granted to spouses of people working in ireland under a work permit. eu business story

this is a good idea i think, it makes perfect sense, especially considering how high the cost of living in ireland is. Mary Harney was interviewed by RTE today and she said something to the effect of:

this is necessary and will be necessary even after accession of the new member states. it is important that we have nurses who speak english and this need will not be met by the accession states.

now i am PARAPHRASING what she said in an interview that i heard on rte’s five seven live. but the mind boggles. does she think nurses from the soon to be member states will have no lingusitic abilities in English? i hope someone takes her aside and lets her know that not only do the accession countries already have number plates with flags on them like eu member states do, but that that most people in the accession countries have the ability to speak english. i do believe it is taught in schools. i wonder will she get a fright when she learns this.
